BERTA | 2020

GHARGHUR, MALTA

Located on the ground floor of The King George Project, BERTA is a coffee shop that embodies a rich history while embracing modern functionality. Originally a post-World War II tea room, BERTA has been thoughtfully reimagined to continue its role as a community hub, reflecting the simplicity and warmth of village life.

The design of BERTA is characterized by a cohesive monolithic volume that integrates various functions, including a bar, bakery, and coffee areas, into a seamless whole. Pure geometric forms and light tones create a fresh, airy atmosphere, while carefully selected materials pay homage to the space’s historical context. Vein-cut travertine floors and counters, along with earth-tone lime plaster backdrops and oak structures, contrast elegantly with the rough-textured local limestone walls, echoing the passage of time and the building’s enduring legacy.

BERTA’s design prioritizes the human experience, ensuring that the space is inviting and conducive to community interaction. The thoughtful layout and material choices create a balance between modern functionality and historical reverence, fostering a special yet understated atmosphere that retains the identity of the typical Maltese village core.
