Gharghur, Malta

Nestled in the historic village of Għargħur, The King George demonstrates how the renovation and extension of a typical Maltese building can preserve the identity of the traditional village core while remaining relevant to contemporary life. Now a boutique hotel, the project is rooted in the heritage and cultural significance of its setting, ensuring that the architecture respects the fabric of the village while adapting the building to modern needs.

The design process began with a careful study of Għargħur’s architectural legacy—its scale, proportions, apertures, and material language. Unnecessary elements were stripped away to reveal the building’s essential character, allowing natural light, shadow, and texture to articulate the spaces. New interventions follow vernacular principles, integrating seamlessly with the existing limestone masonry while introducing refined, modern functionality.

At the ground floor sits Berta, the hotel’s coffee shop, occupying a space that once served as a post-war tearoom. This history informed a design approach that is both respectful and forward-looking. Berta is shaped as a single monolithic volume, integrating the bar, bakery, and coffee areas into a unified architectural element. Pure geometric forms and light tones establish a fresh, airy atmosphere, while a palette of vein-cut travertine, earth-tone lime plaster, and oak structures creates a calm, grounded environment. These softer, contemporary surfaces contrast with the rough-textured local limestone walls, subtly expressing the passage of time and the layered life of the building.

Both The King George and Berta share a commitment to human-centred design, prioritising clarity of space, comfort, and a sense of belonging. The combination of restored historical elements and measured contemporary additions results in an architecture that feels familiar yet renewed. Together, they form a cohesive project that honours the past, supports the present, and preserves the spirit of Għargħur’s village core with quiet confidence.
